MACD: How Two Moving Averages Become a Momentum Signal

MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence) sounds intimidating, but it is built from something you may already know: moving averages. It takes two of them and turns the distance between them into a momentum signal.
The three parts
MACD has three pieces on the chart:
- MACD line — the difference between a fast EMA (commonly 12) and a slow EMA (commonly 26). When the fast average pulls away above the slow one, the line rises.
- Signal line — a 9-period EMA of the MACD line itself. It smooths the MACD line into a slower reference.
- Histogram — the gap between the MACD line and the signal line, drawn as bars. It grows as momentum builds and shrinks as it fades.
What a crossover means
The classic signal is a crossover: when the MACD line crosses above the signal line, momentum is turning up; when it crosses below, momentum is turning down. The histogram flips from negative to positive (or back) at exactly that moment.
A second, simpler reference is the zero line. MACD above zero means the fast EMA is above the slow EMA — broadly an uptrend. Below zero, the reverse.
Divergence, again
Like RSI, MACD can diverge from price. If price makes a higher high but the MACD histogram makes a lower high, the move is losing momentum even as it edges up. Divergence is a heads-up, not a trigger.
The limitation: it lags
MACD is built from moving averages, and moving averages lag. In a quiet, sideways market, MACD crosses back and forth constantly — producing whipsaw signals that cost money. It earns its keep in trending markets, where crossovers line up with real momentum shifts, and struggles in ranges.
A realistic expectation
MACD does not predict. It describes the momentum that price has already shown. Read it as confirmation alongside price structure, not as a standalone buy/sell trigger. Nothing here is financial advice.
